The fabulous flamenco tradition continues this summer in Santa Fe with the world premier of
El Pintor (The Painter) which is produced, written, and directed by Theresa Cardenas and choreographed by internationally known flamenco master, Pablo Rodarte.
Theresa Cardenas has written an original script based on the Spanish painter, Julio Romero de Torres. The story is about the painter’s fascination with Teresa Maria Lopez, a 14-year old maid in the Romero household and the model he chose for his masterpiece, La Chiquita Piconera (The Little Coal Girl). Through dance, music, poetic Spanish lyrics, and with the backdrop of visual images, El Pintor brings the painter's most adored model to life. Romero had an obsessive attraction for her and spent the last four years of his life painting her. During those four years he transforms her simple, innocent beauty into a sensuous woman with sorrowful eyes.
This Spanish dance drama tells the story in a modernistic, lyrical style using traditional flamenco rhythms and classical movements. Three female dancers portray La Chiquita Piconera and represent the different moods captured in many of Torres’ paintings. Themes of love, pain, tragedy, and death lead us to his final masterpiece of the young woman with an immortal essence.
